I design and create one of kind quilts out of clothing. My goal is to give a piece of ancestrial history to follow the generations into the future. My purpose is to mend the heart that knew the soul, one stitch at a time. My sister Barbara showed me the joy of quilting in 1998. But my Texture of Life quilts unfolded to me in 2005, when a young girl of 16, who worked for us,was killed while riding an atv four wheeler. She left behind a one year old little boy, who will never feel the texture of her. I had never made a t shirt quilt before and all the quilts I had made up to this point where from patterns. But I felt a need to give this little boy something to sleep with at night. So I asked this young girls parents if I could have her t shirts. They said yes and sent me two bags of clothing. In the bag where jeans with her handwriting on them, t shirts, socks, hats, pajamas, and sweat shirts. I was feeling a little overwhelmed knowing that I had to use everything. I began by sitting down with the clothing and separating them. When I was done I had made 3 quilts for this little boy. One was made from her flannel pj's and fleece, with a hat on the back so that he could run around with a cap. The 2nd was made of her t shirts that had great sayings. Like, Born an original, Don't Die a copy, Unconditional Love, Smile it confuses people, You are Special, and many more. The 3rd quilt was made up of all her martial art clothing. She became a martial art instructor after her child was born.

Hello MaryFrank, I remember trying to send a comment to you but I didn't think it went through.
DeleteI'm glad you updated me on your mom. I think of her often. I actually have a picture in our home of your mom, dad, you, my cousins Joyce and Linda, my mom and myself I'm being held so I think I'm around 1. My sister Barb had taken our old pictures and put them on a card with many
other pictures. When she (Barb) passed away my brother in Law Frid, gave us all a copy of the card to play on a picture frame. I never shut it off. So it is such a nice surprise to see pictures of days gone by come up. They always touch my heart. So my friend from afar I hope this finds you well. And please give your mom a warm hug from me. Love Donna
P.S. I just finished a great project I will be posting it soon.
